Joey Mawson is a 26 year-old Australian who hails from the Sydney suburb of Hinchinbrook. He started his career in karting in 2003 and throughout the ensuing ten years he won three Australian Championships, a round of the CIK-FIA World Under 18 Championships and finished runner-up at the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals in the UAE.
After spending 2013 based in Europe competing at the highest level of karting Mawson contested the 2014 French Formula 4 Championship where he won on debut before placing fourth in the overall Championship standings.
He finished third in the inaugural season of the ADAC German Formula 4 Championship during 2015 with Van Amersfoort Racing.
For 2016 Joey was one of the favourites for the ADAC German Formula 4 Championship and he lived up to the expectations placed on him by leading throughout the entire eight-round Championship and beating Mick Schumacher by 52 points at the end. Throughout the year he recorded 10 race wins and finished on the podium in 16 of the 24 races contested. In the off season Joey competed in the MRF Challenge where he finished on equal points as the Champion before being awarded runner-up on a countback.
In 2017 Joey made the next step in his single-seater career to compete in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship, continuing with Van Amersfoort Racing with the support of the PODIUM group.
Throughout the year Joey showed glimpses of his true potential as he battled for the Rookie Championship alongside McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris. He would finish fourth in the Rookie standings after scoring points in 27 of the 30 races. His maiden outright podium came in round eight of the Championship at the Nurburgring.
For 2018 Joey switched to the GP3 Series with Arden Motorsport where he was on the podium twice. It was a challenging year for the Arden team whose drivers finished well down the field. At the end of the season Arden chose not to continue in the category for 2019.
In 2019, with the continued support of PODIUM, the Sydney native made the switch from single-seaters to sedan cars with the new “Team Australia” entering the Porsche Mobile 1 Supercup. Joey was on the Rookie podium for every race of the season and achieved one outright podium finish at the Monza circuit in Italy. This was an excellent achievement for his first year driving a sedan car.
Whilst subject to coronavirus travel restrictions, in 2020 Joey competed in German Carrera Cup with disappointing results and shifted back to Australia at the end of that year.
2021 saw a switch back to single seaters where Joey contested the Australian Drivers Championship for S5000 cars where he set new lap records at every circuit he competed on and won the championship and Goldstar Award. Joey repeated that feat in 2022 and is currently defending this S5000 title.
